A robot evaluation is an important step in determining the value of a used robot. When you contact Robots.com aboutselling a robot, each robot system is evaluated for top dollar purchase. The robot is evaluated based on the condition of the robot manipulator and the control cabinet.
Initial questions about your industrial robot:
- The age of the equipment
- The model series and the controller model
- The previous use of the robot and maintenance record
- The length of time in production
- The working state and availability of parts
- The current market demand for that robot model
- The flexibility of the robot system
A robot's value is increased when it includes:
- Functioning teach pendant with no damage
- Full set of servo amps
- All circuit boards in the controller
- Intact cables
- Complete wiring harnesses
Items that reduce the value of a used robot include:
- Missing or damaged motors and encoders
- Incomplete wire harness
- Missing covers from therobot arm
- Cannon connections cracked or broken
Robot Manipulator Assessment Points:
- General functionality
- Presence and condition of all motors and encoders
- Completeness of the internal wire harness
- Presence of the covers on the arm
- Condition of the cannon connectors on the back of the arm
Control Cabinet Assessment Points:
- Availability and condition of the teach pendant
- Status of the servo amps
- Presence of all circuit boards
- Physical condition of the cables that connect to the robot
- Completeness of the wire harnesses
The final value of the robot is determined, in large part, by these items. It is also important to note if the robot was in working condition when it was removed from service and approximately how many hours it was in service.
We will provide a bid on a used robot based on these factors during our checklist evaluation. If your robot is satisfactory based on this checklist, it will get top dollar from Robots.com.

There are specific guidelines to follow when shipping a robot and Robots.com can help you with this procedure.
To ensure you receive the maximum value for your used robotic equipment, you should protect it from shipping damage. You can do so by following these guidelines:
- The equipment must be on skids or crated, with nothing extending over the edge. The robot arm should be bolted to the skid, as strapping may damage the arm. The controller should be strapped or banded to the skid, but take care not to place the strapping over the controller door.
- Therobot armshould be in the squatted position.
- Theteach pendantshould be bubble-wrapped and placed in the controller or in a box secured to the skid.
- All cables should be disconnected from the arm to the controller and wrapped around the base of the controller. They can also be placed on top of the controller and then secured to the skid. Do not cut the cables.
- All items should be shrink-wrapped.
- Accessories, such as the manuals, should be boxed and then secured to the skid.
- Assure that the equipment is placed upright and securely in the shipping trailer. Place tarps on items loaded onto flatbed trucks.
- For added protection, we recommend you photograph all equipment loaded for shipping before it leaves your facility.

An articulated robot arm is a robot with rotary joints. Articulated robots can be used for a wide variety ofrobotic applications. They are also known as a jointed-arm robots.
Thearticulated robot armhas a trunk, shoulder, upper arm, forearm, and wrist. With the ability to rotate all the joints, a majority of these robots have six degrees of freedom.
- Axis 1 - Arm sweeps from side to side
- Axis 2 - Shoulder moves forward and backward.
- Axis 3 - Elbow moves up and down.
- Axis 4 - Middle of forearm pivots up and down.
- Axis 5 - Wrist moves up and down.
- Axis 6 - Wrist sweeps from side to side.
Movement is made in three ways: pitch is up and down movement, yaw is right and left movement, and roll is rotation. This mobility allows articulated robots to be used for tasks such as welding, painting, and assembly.

Definitions
Industrial robotshave various axis configurations. The vast majority of articulated robots, however, feature six axes, also called six degrees of freedom. Six axis robots allow for greater flexibility and can perform a wider variety of applications than robots with fewer axes.
Axis 1
This axis, located at the robot base, allows the robot to rotate from left to right. This sweeping motion extends the work area to include the area on either side and behind the arm. This axis allows the robot to spin up to a full 180 degree range from the center point. This axis is also known as the Motoman: S and Fanuc: J1.
Axis 2
This axis allows the lower arm of the robot to extend forward and backward. It is the axis powering the movement of the entire lower arm. This axis is also known as the Motoman: L and Fanuc: J2.
Axis 3
轴扩展机器人的垂直范围。它艾尔lows the upper arm to raise and lower. On some articulated models, it allows the upper arm to reach behind the body, further expanding the work envelope. This axis gives the upper arm the better part access. This axis is also known as the Motoman: U and Fanuc: J3.
Axis 4
Working in conjunction with the axis 5, this axis aids in the positioning of the end effector and manipulation of the part. Known as the wrist roll, it rotates the upper arm in a circular motion moving parts between horizontal to vertical orientations. This axis is also known as the Motoman: R and Fanuc: J4.
Axis 5
This axis allows the wrist of the robot arm to tilt up and down. This axis is responsible for the pitch and yaw motion. The pitch, or bend, motion is up and down, much like opening and closing a box lid. Yaw moves left and right, like a door on hinges. This axis is also known as the Motoman: B and Fanuc: J5.
Axis 6
This is the wrist of the robot arm. It is responsible for a twisting motion, allowing it to rotate freely in a circular motion, both to position end effectors and to manipulate parts. It is usually capable of more than a 360 degree rotation in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. This axis is also known as the Motoman: T and Fanuc: J6.
Need a Six Axis Robot? The most popular six axis robots are manufactured byYaskawa MotomanandFanuc. To purchase a six axis robot, contact our sales departmentor call 877-762-6881.
Standardfour axis robotsare configured in a slightly different way than the more commonsix axis robot models.Instead of three axes in the wrist area, four axis robots have one. Their simplified design allows them to provide maximum stability and strength for applications such as material handling and palletizing.
Some four axis robot models have reinforcement bars along the upper and lower arms. These bars make the robot sturdier.
- Axis J1:The base axis allows the four axis robot to pivot from left to right.
- Axis J2:This axis is attached to the base configuration. It maneuvers the robot forward and backwards.
- Axis J3:This critical axis joins the upper and lower arms.
- Axis J4:The wrist axis rotates the EOAT. (It is referred to as axis six on a standard 6-axis robot).

Simultaneous Control is a control mode provided for a system with more than one mechanism or axis moving at the same time. When two mechanisms start, move and end simultaneously, they are using simultaneous control.
Synchronization can be done with a robot with a headstock and tailstock, two robots, or a robot manipulator with a slider and/or a positioner (these are sometimes called an external axis).
If you are interested in buying or selling a simultaneous control robot or system, please contact Robots.comat 877-762-6881.
PLC stands for Programmable Logic Controller. This miniature industrial computer interfaces robot system components, making sure everything runs smoothly.
While not necessary for every robot workcell, a PLC is recommended for many robot systems, especially those that are more complex. A valuable interfacing component, PLCs manage the communications between controllers, part positioners, robots, safety peripherals, and more.
The deadman switch is a servo power ON/OFF switch located at the back of someteach pendants. Its purpose is to safeguard the robot operator during the training phase.
While in teach mode, robot servo power remains on while the deadman switch is pressed. However, the power shuts off when the deadman switch is released. During manual manipulation or block operation, the operator can immediate stop the operation by releasing this switch.
Anindustrial robotis comprised of a robot manipulator, power supply, and controllers. Robotic manipulators can be divided into two sections, each with a different function: Robot Arm and Body
The arm and body of a robot are used to move and positionparts或工具在一个信封。他们形成from three joints connected by large links.
Robot Wrist
The wrist is used to orient the parts or tools at the work location. It consists of two or three compact joints.
Robot manipulators are created from a sequence of link and joint combinations. The links are the rigid members connecting the joints, or axes. The axes are the movable components of the robotic manipulator that cause relative motion between adjoining links. The mechanical joints used to construct the robotic arm manipulator consist of five principal types. Two of the joints are linear, in which the relative motion between adjacent links is non-rotational, and three are rotary types, in which the relative motion involves rotation between links.
The arm-and-body section of robotic manipulators is based on one of four configurations. Each of these anatomies provides a different work envelope and is suited for differentapplications.
Gantry Robots
These robots have linear joints and are mounted overhead. They are also called Cartesian and rectilinear robots.
Cylindrical Robots
Named for the shape of its work envelope, cylindrical anatomy robots are fashioned from linear joints that connect to a rotary base joint.
Polar Robots
The base joint of a polar robot allows for twisting and the joints are a combination of rotary and linear types. The work space created by this configuration is spherical.
Jointed-Arm Robots
This is the most popular industrial robotic configuration. The arm connects with a twisting joint, and the links within it are connected with rotary joints. It is also called an articulated robot.

There are six main types of industrial robots: cartesian, SCARA, cylindrical, delta, polar and vertically articulated. However, there are several additional types of robot configurations. Each of these types offers a different joint configuration. The joints in the arm are referred to as axes.

Common Types of Industrial Robots:
Articulated- This robot design features rotary joints and can range from simple two joint structures to 10 or more joints. The arm is connected to the base with a twisting joint. The links in the arm are connected by rotary joints. Each joint is called an axis and provides an additional degree of freedom, or range of motion. Industrial robots commonly have four or six axes.
Cartesian- These are also called rectilinear or gantry robots. Cartesian robots have three linear joints that use the Cartesian coordinate system (X, Y, and Z). They also may have an attached wrist to allow for rotational movement. The three prismatic joints deliver a linear motion along the axis.
Cylindrical- The robot has at least one rotary joint at the base and at least one prismatic joint to connect the links. The rotary joint uses a rotational motion along the joint axis, while the prismatic joint moves in a linear motion. Cylindrical robots operate within a cylindrical-shaped work envelope.
Polar- Also called spherical robots, in this configuration the arm is connected to the base with a twisting joint and a combination of two rotary joints and one linear joint. The axes form a polar coordinate system and create a spherical-shaped work envelope.
SCARA- Commonly used in assembly applications, this selectively compliant arm for robotic assembly is primarily cylindrical in design. It features two parallel joints that provide compliance in one selected plane.
Delta -These spider-like robots are built from jointed parallelograms connected to a common base. The parallelograms move a single EOAT in a dome-shaped work area. Heavily used in the food, pharmaceutical, and electronic industries, this robot configuration is capable of delicate, precise movement.
Typical industrial robots are articulated and feature six axes of motion (6 degrees of freedom). This design allows maximum flexibility. Six-axis robots are ideal for:
Anindustrial robotarm includes these mainparts: Controller, Arm, End Effector, Drive, Sensor
Thecontrolleris the "brain" of the industrial robotic arm and allows the parts of the robot to operate together. It works as a computer and allows the robot to also be connected to other systems. The robotic arm controller runs a set of instructions written in code called a program. The program is inputted with a teach pendant. Many of today's industrial robot arms use an interface that resembles or is built on the Windows operating system.
Industrial robot armscan vary in size and shape. The industrialrobot armis the part that positions the end effector. With the robot arm, the shoulder, elbow, and wrist move and twist to position the end effector in the exact right spot. Each of these joints gives the robot another degree of freedom. A simple robot with three degrees of freedom can move in three ways: up & down, left & right, and forward & backward. Many industrial robots in factories today are six axis robots.
Theend effectorconnects to the robot's arm and functions as a hand. This part comes in direct contact with the material the robot is manipulating. Some variations of an effector are a gripper, a vacuum pump, magnets, and welding torches. Some robots are capable of changing end effectors and can be programmed for different sets of tasks.
Thedriveis the engine or motor that moves the links into their designated positions. The links are the sections between the joints. Industrial robot arms generally use one of the following types of drives: hydraulic, electric, or pneumatic. Hydraulic drive systems give a robot great speed and strength. An electric system provides a robot with less speed and strength. Pneumatic drive systems are used for smaller robots that have fewer axes of movement. Drives should be periodically inspected for wear and replaced if necessary.
Sensors允许工业机械手臂收到feedback about its environment. They can give the robot a limited sense of sight and sound. The sensor collects information and sends it electronically to the robot controlled. One use of these sensors is to keep two robots that work closely together from bumping into each other. Sensors can also assist end effectors by adjusting for part variances. Vision sensors allow a pick and place robot to differentiate between items to choose and items to ignore.

A cycle is the interval of time during which a repeated process is performed. Decreased part cycle time is one of the advantages ofrobot automation. Replacing manual processes with the efficiency of robots leads to increased production and profits.
Part cycle time is influenced by several variables. These include the distance a part must travel, complexity of the cycle, quality of other machinery involved, flexibility and features of the robot, and tooling choices. Cycle time can be simulated with advanced 3D software or more accurately determined with a feasibility study.
Due to our experience, Robots.com can estimate a part cycle time when given specifics on the part and the current process. If you require an exact cycle time, contact our sales departmentat 877-762-6881 about performing a study of your part process.
